		<description>Emil Benčík (1933) is a Slovak journalist and author. A long-time editor of the Slovak Radio in Bratislava, he has written many literary, biographical, dramatic and documentary radio programmes (“features“), series and cycles. Among the most important of these are radio series about Alexander Dubček „The first man of Czechoslovak spring“ /Prvý muž česko-slovenskej jari), about Andrej Hlinka „Bell Andrej“ (Zvon Andrej), about the Slovak national antifascist uprising in the year 1944 „Dies veritatis – Day of truth“ (Deň pravdy), about the Holocaust of Slovak Jewery „Life and death with the David star“ (Život a smrť s Dávidovou hviezdou). He was also interested in the Second world war with radio dramas like The conference of Tehran, Yalta and Postupim, The Nuremberg process, Operation Overlord and The last day of war, the first day of peace (Posledný deň vojny, prvý deň mieru). He dedicated a four part radio series „With the head against the wall“ (Hlavou proti múru) to uprisings against the totalist regimes in the soviet bloc. He is also the author of numerous satirical radio programmes, profiles of personalities and three cycles of lyrical miniatures – „Quiet hands“ (Tiché ruky), „Nest in the hands“(Hniezdo na dlani) and „Let the trees grow“(Nechajme stromy rásť). The radio output of Emil Benčík has been digitalised in a DVD collection called „What the wind did not blow away“ (Čo neodvial vietor). He is the autor of books „The worn-out black“ (Vyblednutá čerň) and „In service of the radio“ (V službách rozhlasu). He also writes novellas and short stories. He is the autor of “a book godly and ungodly short stories and sayings“ called “A ladder to heaven“ (Rebrík do neba). The work of Emil Benčík has been awarded numerous prizes, premiums of the Literary fund of Slovak republic, the medal of Alexander Dubček as well as the Prize of Vojtech Zamarovský for non-fiction literature.
